The measurement of the respiratory motion of patients is essential for rehabilitation therapy and roboticsurgeries. For a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the measured motion datacan be used in the training to improve the respiratory activity of the patient. On the other hand, duringa lung biopsy, the robot must be able to reflect the respiratory motion of the patient in order to avoiddamaging the surrounding tissues. In this study, a novel respiratory motion measurement system consistsof two Wiimote controllers and an Infrared LED tag was developed. The developed system islow-cost, and it can measure the 3-D position of the tag and send the data to a PC via Bluetooth. Toverify the performance of the system, we measured the respiratory motion at abdomen and chest ofpatients and analyzed the data. It was found that abdomen and chest showed different respiratorymotions; the motion at abdomen showed the same magnitude in all three directions while the chestshowed a bigger motion along z-axis. The developed system will be integrated to a master-slave typebiopsy robot to compensate respiratory motion during a biopsy.
